And now for Stephanie & Luke’s love story…

“I was just 17 when I first lay eyes on the man that would change my world. I was so certain that he was meant to be in my future, that I announced in Maths class I had ‘finally’ found someone. I hadn’t had a conversation with him, I didn’t know his hopes or his dreams, I didn’t know where he lived or what his hobbies were, I didn’t even know his name… but I just knew.

A few months later we had our first, albeit brief, conversation. A few months after that we shared our first kiss. One week after that we started dating… and I still knew.

Slowly, the details of his life became apparent to me, but mostly they just seemed so unimportant. We were young and he took my breath away and that was all that seemed to matter, but then they started to matter greatly.

Two years into our relationship he went to Dubai to play in the World Under 19 rugby union championships, then to Perth to play. I didn’t think much of it, I always thought rugby was a sideline to his University studies, but then three years into our relationship he told me he got offered a contract to play rugby in Italy for a year. My whole world was thrown upside down. I still had 2 years to finish my university degrees but how could I say no? It was his dream he told me, his everything. I helped him pack his bags.

Almost immediately Luke got selected to play for the National Italian Rugby Team thanks to his Italian heritage. I still remember the phone call “I think I am going to be here for a while.” For 2 years I travelled back and forth between Italy and Australia, struggling with a long distance relationship.

Then five years into our relationship and a few months before I was due to finish my studies and move to finally be with him I got scared. Totally and utterly terrified. Was I ready to leave my family, everything I knew, my possible career, to move to a completely foreign place on the other side of the world? Suddenly I wasn’t so sure I knew after all… so I ran. I said I wasn’t ready for this that I was going touring around Europe with a girlfriend.

It was almost at the end of my adventure and I still didn’t know. I was sitting on boat, in the port of Split in Croatia, about to leave for the airport when I got a text message “I’m coming to meet you in Rome tomorrow”. It seemed that this time it was he who knew. So I bolted out of the boat leaving an extremely confused friend and I headed straight to Zara. I had been backpacking for months and I had no clean, decent clothes and there was no way I was letting him see me after almost 8 months looking like … well …. a backpacker!

For the next 24 hours I couldn’t function. I couldn’t sleep or eat or manage a conversation. I still couldn’t decide if I was making a terrible mistake seeing him, but evidently I found myself standing at the Rome train station waiting to find out.

It was hot and crowded in the train station as families, tourists and business people hurried onto trains heading for destinations all over the country. Still to this day I can remember every single feeling, sensation and emotion that I went through in the moments leading up to seeing him. From the smell of the coffee, to the African men yelling out to people to buy their wares, it seemed like all my emotions were heightened…. and they all culminated in the moment that he walked off that train. The moment our eyes met I felt all the air was sucked out of my lungs. I couldn’t move…

…but I knew before he even reached me and held me. I was 17 again and I just knew. 100%.

That night he said to me “come and live with me” and I did. One year and half later there has not been a day that I have regretted moving to Italy to be with him. It hasn’t always been easy, there have been trying times, but it has been wonderful, he is wonderful. I feel completely blessed to be with someone so incredible who, after 7 years, I love more than ever.”

Allie & Heath’s Wonderful Album

Last year we photographed the wedding of two very nice people down Currumbin way. They are Allie & Heath, their wedding photography was on the beach, and they experienced a natural exhibition like no other!

Mother nature at her best.

Here are a few of their wedding album page designs for you to enjoy…

Ahh Melbourne!

You Melbourne photographers are blessed to have so much great architecture, I hope I never hear you complain about not having any photography locations. This shot of Prue & James was taken at the GPO on Burke St, but could be Turino (Turin) Italy.

Two Lovers, One Future

Here is a little Friday afternoon fun with yet another tribute to pop culture. This time we are paying homage one of our favourite films Inception. This is another great shot taken by Rich on their recent trip down to Melbourne to photograph the lovely Prue + James. Check out Rich’s blog post here to read about Prue + James’ portrait session in Melbourne.

This adds to our other pop culture tribute for The Paterson’s where we created a rock and roll album cover for them inspired by their trip to the UK where they crossed the famous Abbey Road crossing.

Melbourne Part 1 – Sophie & Sam

Cath & I believe having your portrait taken by your wedding photographer before the actual wedding day is so valuable. Apart from having a beautiful set of images which capture our clients love and lifestyle, it’s a great way to get to know each other better, and for our clients to get an insight into what it’s like at the pointy end of the camera.

We realised we had a few client’s currently living in Melbourne, and decided to get out of Brisbane for a change of scenery, and capture their Melbourne life experiences.

So on the weekend we headed to Melbourne with three portrait shoots, and loads of ideas. Whilst Sophie & Sam were the last shoot we did, they are the first image we’d like to show you all. An absolutely gorgeous young couple, they were so lovely even though we made them veeery late to their dinner engagement… blame the photographers (and daylight saving)!! Think of St Kilda and this would not be the image you would think of, but it captures them perfectly… the stance, the look, they are so sweet. Well done Cath, great image!

Melbourne Part 2 – Prue & James

Walking around Melbourne we found some awesome spots for photography. The place is teeming with possibilities.

We dragged Prue & James through dank and dirty alleyways (how romantic!), Italianesque (my word) gallerias, and rundown historic buildings. We discovered a lot about this attractive couple as we went from location to location. One thing is for sure, James is a card, and Prue loves his cheeky ways.

We will post some more shots which truly reveal their character, but for now I want to post this shot, if only to prove to Prue & James we are not insane, and this building is fantastic. What do you think? Please comment and tell me I’m right. I’d have this on my wall in a heartbeat.

Melbourne Part 3 – Caroline & Anthony

In the heat of a very hot Melbourne afternoon, about 36 degrees, we met up with Caroline and Anthony at a lovely park called Edinburgh Gardens, not far from where they live. After some shots in an historic old grandstand, once the home of the Fitzroy Lions, we headed to the Carlton Gardens. The Exhibition building and the classic ornate fountain were too hard to resist as a romantic backdrop.

After the final of the Australian Open on Sunday night, Anthony emailed us a shot of the Australian Open winner, Novak Djokovic, kissing his winning cup in the very same spot… we had a great laugh at Anthony’s comment that he thought they were more passionate! I had to include two shots from Caroline & Anthony’s shoot to show the fountain shot.

We know every wedding photographer in Melbourne would have taken this shot at least once in their career, but for Caroline & Anthony it might just represent their time in Melbourne, and a very special time in their lives as they lead up to their wedding in Brisbane. Thanks guys, it was great fun.

Circle of Life Story – Daniel & Annaliese

The team at Vivid are all back on deck after a wonderful break. During our holidays Cath & I and the monkeys had some awesome pizza in a great little joint in Bellingen, near Coffs Harbour, called Little Red Kitchen. If you are down that way go there… it’s very cool. Whilst chowing down, I noticed this cute couple busily scribbling on the paper tablecloth (endorsed by the owners), and they really seemed to be putting a lot of effort into it. Nicely framed by the window I thought That’s a nice moment, we should capture that for them – it’s what we do – notice moments and capture them.

So we asked them if we could take a snap of them whilst they drew, and they were lovely enough to agree. Then they told us their Circle of Life Story.

You see they were doing exactly the same thing two years ago in this little restaurant, whilst on their honeymoon, and took the drawings home to celebrate and remember that special once in a lifetime event. Now two years later they are creating a new artwork for another reason, in fact for someone else. They now have another once in a lifetime event to celebrate… the oncoming birth of their first baby.

I can imagine they will display this artwork on the wall of their little one’s bedroom, and then one day… years later… they will bring the drawing out and relive that night, that feeling, that excitement, that anticipation. With two kids of our own Cath & know that feeling, and just hours before the birth of Daniel, our first, we made a video describing how we felt and what we were looking forward to. Maybe it was that feeling and excitement we could see in their faces as they drew, which impelled us to capture the special thing we saw happening, without even knowing the story. We wish them both the best, and know their baby will have very loving parents.

The Circle of life.

We really only get one go at it so we have to do the best we can with that chance. Same thing goes for photographers and their work. If we see something special we MUST capture that moment, and do the right thing by the subjects. Make sure they get to enjoy the moment through our images, and at no charge.

Lessons in Wedding Photography

Leigh and I had a great experience with Kelly & Andrew on their wedding day, so I know they won’t mind me telling you this story. For any photographer’s new to wedding photography, there is no substitute for experience, so assist on as many weddings as you can with experienced photographers. This is why.

Saturday 15th October was one of the wettest days we have had to negotiate in recent times. The ceremony was in the morning but we were very lucky, as the sun came out and gave Kelly and Andrew the beautiful garden ceremony they had hoped for. Running behind schedule though, they were keen to join their guests for the lunchtime reception at Songbirds. We had scheduled a photo shoot after the reception, however a storm had been forecast and I was unsure if the bridal party would want to have photography after the reception.

Lesson 1… make hay while the sun shines. We managed to get 20 minutes and took some lovely images… then the clouds rolled in.

About 3pm it go so dark, we looked at BOM and it was bleak. The storm hit, it was like a waterfall, and then the power went off at the Reception. Kelly was feeling pretty down, and knew the shoot at the lookout was not going to happen. She sent away the car that was to drive them to the shoot and told the bridal party to go home after the reception. Thank God we snaffled that 20 minutes before the reception.

I wasn’t ready to go home, there were still some shots we could do in this weather. We did some cool shots inside, and then decided hell let’s just go out in the rain. When we walked outside we could see it about to break. I looked at Andrew and said this is what I have waited 3 hrs for, and told him to find a car… let’s go now!!! We got up there and it was glorious.

Lesson 2… never give up. Wedding photographers in Qld know better than most that afternoon storms hit fast and hard, but usually clear for the sunset. So we hung around. For hours.

Driving home I said to Leigh, if we hadn’t managed to get those shots I would have not have delivered what I had promised. I know the weather has the last say, but we can do everything in our power to never give up and just shift the goalposts as the game changes.

Lesson 3… always fill the brief. Always give yourself every opportunity to get the what your client has hired you to do. Whatever it takes.

Rich
